We are in the process of clearing out the old stables to move my mare and her new friend (world horse welfare pony) into this winter. The stables are in a well ventilated barn but are listed. The tops of the doors have wooden bars but I would prefer for them to be able to stick their heads out. Do you think it would be safe to use stall guards (the filled in ones not mesh) overnight and leave their doors open. They are in a barn so if one broke they wouldn't get far! Both are 15h and rather inflexible so not particularly worried about them wriggling under. Also checking on whether whitewash is OK to use, I believe it is but just checking!

I've recently removed the stable door and installed slip rail brackets (from Robinsons) and a wooden rail/plank to one of my pony stables. It works fine and I have no concerns about the pony getting out or caught in any way overnight. Might be worth you considering?
