My mare injured a tendon and popped a splint in early October so I had her on full stall rest for close to 6 weeks and have been hand walking her since. She's going quite bonkers - between the cool weather and the enforced inactivity.

A week and a half ago, she got stupid on the lead, suddenly reared straight up and fell over backwards - like an idiot I didn't let go (it happened SO quick), got yanked forward right into her flailing feet and got bashed in the face.

I've got about 6 broken bones in my face but it's not nearly as bad as it sounds - no damage to my eye, didn't lose any teeth, etc. Horse didn't get hurt thankfully (just what I need - more stall rest  ).

But the question is, how the heck do you retain manners in a 5 year old TB mare - in the autumn - who can only be hand walked!? Seriously - any good ideas? I walk her with a stud chain and when she does get stupid, I'm firm and make her move her feet (backing, sidepassing, whatever - something to say "hey, I'm in charge here") but it's a real handful and the potential to get hurt is definitely there.

I'm finally able to turn her out in a small paddock where she can do a limited amount of playing but it's still not enough to completely cool the energy. Feed is already cut back and no high-energy grain. Ideas?
