Have you ever heard of chucking a bucket of water over a stabled stallion that is double-barrelling the walls and shouting?

Better than going in and beating seven shades of **** out of him.
Never had to do it personally, but then mine is never shut in for long and when he is he lies down and goes to sleep, I have to go in and wake him up
Stallions are pretty vocal on the whole, especially at this time of year, it is the nature of the beast, just something you put up with and get used to I guess.

It's not something I've done btw, just something I've heard of recently. Stallion only young and not been stabled much I don't think. Getting in a tiz when other horses moving about yd..........

Perfectly normal behaviour for any young horse then going by those details, regardless of the fact that he is entire. Bucket of water is only going to work for the amount of time it takes for him to get over the shock, and then you'll have either a very cross, or even more distressed horse, but still better than a beating.

Why limit it to stallions?? I have a mare here - lovingly nicknamed 'psycho b*tch from hell' - who has 4 x quarter buckets of water lined up outside her stable at all times! (I use quarter buckets to save on bedding!)
And my 3 year old colt can be a bit silly being led to the manege if he has to go past stables containing mares - a few buckets are lined up ready for him.
The beauty of the bucket of water trick is they DON'T associate it with a human - but with what they're doing at the time. So they learn the consequences of unacceptable behaviour!

I used to use the hose pipe to load a mare of mine, quick squirt up the bum and she stopped pratting about and walked straight on.
