hi there.
i have a beautiful holsteiner x stallion, with fantastic breeding, striking good looks, a temp. to die for and a phenomenal jump. however, for one reason or another, i am still not sure if he will pass a grading, (which he needs, to jump BSJA, unless i want to pay an extra £1000 per year), especially having seen some of the gorgeous stallions who failed at the recent Sport Horse GB grading at Addington.
i never want to breed from him (unless he turns into a world cup horse), but don't want him cut as he is seven years old, a gent at all times (and it seems a waste to cut him) and i don't want him to lose his switched on brainy attitude (which less face it, as much as i love my geldings, it happens).
i think its a shame that the only gradings you can have are with studbook and breeding societies.
wouldn't it be refereshing to have an association which graded stallions, purely for there temp, manners and perhaps ability in their chosen sphere. obviously, they would not be graded in relation to any breeding perposes, but would still enable these stallions to be graded and aknowledged for their strenghts other than the potential of their offspring.
i am really interested to hear what you guys have to say about this, and also, what the restrictions, and grading requirements are in other spheres.
thanks for reading, sorry its a long post!

i do see where you are coming from but at the same time i couldn't see it being successful. the point of grading is to weed out poor stock. if you could still have a registered stallion people who's horses fail the grading would just take that option and we would end up with weakened bloodlines as the poor stock would continue to breed. realistically they should be cut if they don't have breeding potential but i do understand what you mean about losing their spark. if you're guy is sound and has good potential i can't see why he wouldn't pass. sure some stunners don't get their grading but remember all that glitters isn't gold!!

Can I ask why you don't think he'd pass a grading? I ask because it has been suggested on the forum that perhaps these are not entirely impartial and sometimes horses are graded that are not as nice as others that failed.
If this is indeed the case, perhaps the solution would be an association that is truly impartial. An inferior horse should simply not be graded.
Having said that, (and not being very well-informed about BSJA) I don't understand why your stallion has to be graded, particularly if you don't intend to breed from him.
Also, the main point of keeping horses entire is for breeding purposes, so an association such as you suggest would seem a bit pointless. Sorry!

Unless you are going to breed I would not see the advantage of grading a stallion. For his breeding would he not come under the BSH? I think that covers "graded stallions, purely for there temp, manners and perhaps ability in their chosen sphere".
