What does this mean and why is it bad??
Just browsing through the ads in this weeks H&H and seen this in an ad, they also said 'because of this prob not good 1st stallion'. Im not looking fo another horse, let alone a stallion but my gelding grabs his reins, lead rope which drives me mad and I wondered what was meant by it?
Sorry if this is a stupid question

We have a couple of youngsters that do it, or started it when they were younger. I think we may have encouraged it with one of them because we used to give him the rope to chew when having his feet done because it kept him quiet! DOH!! Not quite sure why it is such a terrible thing that they do him down though, I would have thought it was just annoying and possibly bad mannered than anything. ..............But others may know differently!

My gelding does it and he isnt ill mannered, dominant or anything. It just annoys me when he grabs his reins though.
I was just interested when it said, not 1st stallion and needs experienced handler as mouths ropes etc.

Thanks for replying

Most stallions 'mouthe' things - reins, ropes etc. FAR preferable to the alternative which is taking your arm off!

But it does tend to frighten the unwary! A stallion I owned briefly had this habit (it wasn't his worst by a long shot.) The previous owner told me in all seriousness that it was easy to get a headcollar on him, you just had to give him a feed and you could then strap the headcollar on while he was eating!

Needless to say I did NOT follow this advice and had no real trouble getting his headcollar or bridle on - just needs you to be a bit quick! At a large racing stable I worked at years ago, ALL the colts would grab the noseband of the headcollar as you went to put it on - the 'test' for all potential new grooms was to hand them a headcollar and ask them to put it on one of the colts who WOULDN'T actually grab their faces. If they couldn't do it, no job!

Hmmm my mare likes to chew/mouth things. She occasionally tries to eat her leadrope when tied up. When putting her bridle on she will try to eat the end of her noseband or flash before I fasten them. And if i'm riding and just stood with a loose rein she will try to grab the rein to chew. No idea why.

Not sure if thats similar to what you mean!
