Are there any videos, books or articles that you would recommend on the upbringing of a young stallion, and competing/training one?

Oh quick update, my boy has learned to lunge by voice in a day, wore a roller the next and has now taken to side reins, with no fuss whatsover! Saddle is this weekend!

Basically, just bring him up as you would any young horse not allowing any liberties to be taken. Never give a titbit from your hand or pocket, always from a bucket if you MUST give something. Have also been well advised not to wear perfume of any description around a colt too I suppose that to mean flowery deo's too!

Just one thing I would say is to be very careful with him around pregnant ladies (I don't let any go in with my stallion) and sometimes they can be a little funny at certain times of the month.....I've noticed that when friends are here my stallion can be different with them when they are "on".

He is lovely, yes when i was at hartpury, and going over to the stud side, we were told not to wear perfume, aparantly, they can mistake the smell for a mare in season.

This is something that you really should be aware of - many stallions are OK, but it's not worth risking!! I knew a girl who was badly attacked by a stallion when she was doing late night stables and was dressed ready to go out!! If you must do that - put your perfume on AFTER you are done with the horse. Use a un-scented deoderant too!

Hmm I wonder if you introduced it at a young age, and if they grew up with it, realised that it wasn't anything 'interesting'.

Scary I always am wearing perfume, as I deal with horses both before and after my 'day' job.

When I worked at a stud farm we had one stallion who loved the smell of cigarettes!

I would second not giving titbits!
