Hello all,

A friend of mine is looking for a stallion to cover her 13.2hh cob mare, looking for something bigger and sportier to get a nice Cob X allrounder about 15.2hh.
BUT she is only looking for stallions that will cover naturally as the mare is difficult to get in season so wants to send her off to run with a stallion for a couple of months. In the age of AI she's finding it very difficult to find a match.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received :)

I think she is being unrealistic thinking about 15.2hh offspring.
A small mare will heavily influence the size of a foal.
Natural cover from a big stallion on a 13.2hh??
If she is going to do it then a 15-15.2hh TB/Arab/Anglo. Something like Marcus Aurelius.

But in all honesty she should probably just buy what she wants

Totally, totally agree. I know very little about breeding but thought it seemed quite optimistic.

sounds like a very bad idea. a small mare running with a big stallion could get physically injured. there is no guarantee the foal will be the right size at the end of it anyway. plus the dangers of a small maiden mare carrying a big foal. buy what she wants is a safer bet,.

She cannot breed what she wants without seriously risking the mare.
Tell her to buy a foal.

Thanks all. You've confirmed all of my initial thoughts but I don't have any knowledge or experience with breeding so didn't feel qualified to advise. The mare was a gift and is too small for her to ride, so I think she is hoping to breed something she will be able to ride. I've always just bought youngsters, you know exactly what you're getting and can be sure its the right type and size! Breeding is so much risk and guesswork, plus the waiting, really not for me. Now to tactfully pass the message on..
