Stallion Suggestions for My Mare?

We're so pleased with our foal that we're thinking about putting her mum back in foal next year. Mum is a full New Forest 13.1hh JA jumping pony and next year she'll be 18yo - she was AI'd at 16yo and took first time with her first foal.

There are lots of super stallions out there but we'd like to breed a 14.2hh jumping pony and so we're thinking of a small horse stallion.

Does anyone have any suggestions of small stallions that are proven competitively? Someone suggested Uptons Deli Circus and I wondered if anyone had come across him or his stock?
 
Thanks, brackenhappy. I much prefer the jumping technique of the second stallion though I wonder if he's maybe just a bit too heavily built for our mare. He's the right size though at 15.2hh. Unfortunately our video card is useless on this PC and so I couldn't watch all of the video but I'll keep trying til it works!

Any other suggestions gratefully received.

I love Uptons Deli Circus because I've seen him competing and thought his attitude and technique were fab, but then I am biased..

But he didn't grade first time and I think he has a few minor conformational faults. Having said that any horse that's advanced eventing, with 216 points, tough and sound is worth a look in my book.
 
no probs! if you go to the stud or phone them they will discuss which stallions are the best for you. they have visiting stallions as well. i took photos of bracken there as couldnt decide between marksman,dollar or top gun!! settled for dollar as he will go best for bracken. another thing although you are best speaking to the stud is dollar and top gun's foals are born really leggy so dont have to much probs if put to smaller mares, one of top guns progeny is to a 14hh pony! i have put link to their home page at bottom of this! my mare has gone to dollar who in his first crop of foals has one to a highland mare!!

Seriously though I'd thought you'd want something around 15.2 - 16hands, although im no expert and i know this still doesn't guarantee a 14.2. My friend got a 17.1 from a 14.1 mare and 16.1 stallion

). Measuring her leg it looks as if she should end up 14.2, fingers crossed, mum is 13.2 NF and dad is Ringo.
 
We have bred some lovely competition type ponies (oldest is 3) out of a 13.1hhs welsh mare to a 15.1hhs Quarter Horse stallion - who does jump.
All look likely to make 14.2hhs, move well and the eldest has popped a fence loose.
 
IMO you don't want a stallion over 15.2. If you use 15.2 on 13.1 you should get 14.1-2, although it could go over/under but more likely to go over imo as she has a had a foal before.

When my other 14.2 stallion is crossed with 13-13.1 mares, the foals are still making 14-14.2.

As you want a 14.2 (I take it you are thinking of lhc's in future) I wouldn't use bigger than 15.2, you can't guarantee the foal will stay in the 148 limit and still may end up with a small horse 14.3-15h. If it was me I would use a 14.2-15h stallion, this isn't because my stallion is 14.2 its because i've been breeding ponies for a number of years now and ive been pushing the pony adult height limit many times even when both parents are well under 14.2.
 
The QH is very little used in this country but I think they are a lovely breed. They have proved quiet sucessful when crossed with natives to produce good games ponies & the natives & their crosses have produced some very good jumping ponies so you could get a nice sort using a QH. I also like the Arab & AA on natives. You would then have a PBA so have the option of those showing classes with the baby. I have owned a AA x QH (but lost her after she broke a leg) & a Welsh X QH both had great temperments & very easy to deal with even though they were chestnut mares! Try to use a stallion though that has proven form & offspring that are showing ability as SJ's.
 
Thanks everyone. Having listened to advice I'm thinking I might be safer going for a 14.2hh stallion as very little chance then of breeding a small horse.

Friend yesterday suggested Machno Carwyn or his sire Carregcoch Bleddyn. I really like the technique of Carwyn himself and his children (www.machno.com) and a Welsh D should produce a pony that might carry our younger son as long as possible through juniors.

Does anyone know Machno Carwyn or his offspring?

not that I'm not biased cause I know them all, their temprements and abilities etc etc. I'm using CVS Bellagio this year and hopefully Romeo next year one one of my mares (Peaches) and the other (Navalgem) I'm thinking of using CVS Hot Business on next year after she's had her foal to my lovely colt Spellbound

If Ousbek was still around I would have said to use him and given you a 100% satisfaction guarantee on the foal because his youngsters are amazing and I haven't seen one that can't jump, I have people ringing me for his offspring (not just anyone either - the parents of top junior riders!) but I am not parting with the last couple for love nor money and I wish I had kept more of his offspring and bred more than just a couple a year but thats hindsight, I can't change it now!

and I have pictures of some of his offspring that I had sent to me from his owners in Switzerland, I am looking into importing some of his semen from them (it works out cheaper getting the semen from his owners and importing it than getting it from the Machno Stud

), You have to remember that Machno Carwyn is only available by frozen semen though and I don't think he is a full up 14.2 but he is one of the best pony stallion in the world imo, I also rate Aron and Linaro from France as well.

If you like the idea of a Welsh Section D, you should consider Gorsfraith Brenin (by god it can jump!), ive had a youngster by him - STUNNING!, also his foal won the pony section Championship at the furturity last year and he is Champion Pony Stallion on the furturity as well I believe, I speak to his owner abit as we share a passion for pony breeding and have similar ideas and she is lovely! I can PM you details if you like or he is on the SPSS website.

HorseGroupie - thanks for all of your helpful comments. Looking at your website you have some super stallions and I even recognise the coloured 148cms mare by Limbo. It's a small world indeed.

I am seriously considering Machno Carwyn as he should produce something with substance that should carry a boy through his junior years - as well as something that can jump! If the foal ends up at an "odd" height at maturity it could do M&M workers (Mum is a full NF) or WHP etc

What are his offspring like in the photos? I'd be fascinated to know.. Someone who is a friend of a friend has a foal this year by him and is so impressed he's putting the mare back to him. Do you know if the owners have a website?

Thats really interesting to hear your experience HorseGroupie! I shall remember that if I ever breed form Bramble and Teazle again, although thats unlikely. They are maidens so I don't think Rainbow will go over 14.2, as shes pretty small, but we shall see.

Also have to say ALL of your horses' are gorgeous, and I think its great we get to hear your opinions/views. I'm VERY tempted to use one of your stallions

I have been through so many measurings that I haven't known which why they are going to go, that I think I may have a heartattack from the stress of will it won't it get in!

My new plan is to go for 14-14.1 and try and lose some of the stress of wandering if they are going to get measured in! Especially now thay are measuring ponies routinely at certain shows!

Hhmm - _CLaire's _ message got me thinking but when I looked back to the previous thread I like Thistle's Willough and that's the sort of type I would like to breed.

My priorities are, equally, jumping ability and coming in under 14.2hh, and something with a bit of substance that fits those two essential criteria would be ideal for son in due course.

Of course, there are never guarantees of any kind so perhaps I should put the money in the bank and buy a 4yo in 6 years time! Wouldn't be quite so much fun, though...

Does anyone else have a native x native? Surely these must perform? Ours certainly does..
 
I know purebred natives that are performers but do you know I can't think of one native x native performer off the top of my head! Let me look into that for you!

Would be cheaper in the long one to buy one but it is so much more interesting to breed your own!
