Do you remember Pink making that big fuss about the carriage horses in NY being kept in stalls and how cruel that was.

Do you guys think it is cruel for a horse to be kept in a stall? I don't think I do, as long as the horse is getting a lot of work and is well looked after I don't think it matters. I know its not an ideal way to keep a horse but there are a lot of worse places/conditions that horses have to live in.

So is she just a mad do-gooder or does she have a point?

It depends how it is done. Horses in loose boxes are often so badly managed that they develop vices.... but no one complains about stabling

Are you joking!? Just because one thing may be slightly less cruel that something else it doesn't make it right.

I frankly think that stalls are veal calf style torture. How would you feel if you couldn't turn around or lie down!

Its not that it is slightly less cruel, I have had no experience of horses kept in stalls. Surely veal calf's are not taken out and exercised, groomed and petted and so on? I don't know if the horses in question are (would be very interested to know), but If I had to do it my horses would be spoilt rotten.

Has Number cruncher ever seen a horse stall?!! Jeez..why lambast something with no knowledge. Horses can lie down, and maneuver themselves in stalls, and yes they can turn around they are just prevented from doing so by their ropes.
I thought most of the Met horses were stabled rather than stalled? Certainly those in Imber Court, Hammersmith and Wandsworth..am sure?

the riding school I used to work at only had stalls. The horses were on a rope with a ball on the end that was fed through a ring on the wall and meant they could move around a little, they also managed to lie down quite easily. They always seemed happy enough to be in them. I dont think I would like to keep mine in them as I love my huge stables but I don't think they are cruel. Perhaps they are not seen as ideal these days because we are all used to loose boxes but for working horses they used to be the norm.

the riding school i used to ride at and where i brought my pony from had stalls- she was kept in one. tbh non of the horses seemed unhappy but i personally hate stalls - the horses were tied with a heavy brick on the end of a rope fed through a tie ring so the head collars dug in. my pony (before we brought her and moved her away from the hole) used to lie down in her muck, she got in matted into her sides, her old owner tried to clip it off which caused her so much pain we cant get near her with clippers now. the stalls were dark and dingy and the girls who worked there used to squirt the horses bums with the hose pipe so again pony is terrified of hoses. i would NEVER keep either of my two in a stall (they're far too spolit now)! but im sure the police do it very different to some riding schools!

Stalls should be large enough for the horse to lie down, and mucked out regularly so there isn't a build up of waste.
In horse welfare terms, there are fewer stereotypies in stalls, perhaps because the horses have visual contact with all their friends...which helps to keep them settled.
