My horse keeps stamping his back legs and biting his lower legs at the back, another livery has said it's prob mites? Is that right at this time of the year? She said I should get Frontline from the vet and it should clear it up.

If anyone has any other advice I would really appreciate it, he's part Clydesdale (we think) fairly heavy but not hairy, I clip his legs and hog his mane, he's a show cob, but light weight version!

Do you take him in a sand school? I have ridden horses who stamp when the sand gets in their feathers.
Just a thought. I don't think it would be mites but wouldn't rule it out as its been very warm.
Good luck

Sounds like it could be feather mite, or some kind of reaction to the bedding, straw and sawdust can carry all sorts of little cretins, I'd wash them every day for a week in some antibacterial shampoo and treat with front line, have a good feel around in the hair, could also be blocked pores which will cause him to want to itch his legs also.

Mine did this for a couple of days, I assumed it was mites suddenly turned hopping lame a couple of days later and it turned out to be an abcess in his heel. Worth keeping an eye on

Treat with frontline and repeat every ten days for a month, then use pig oil and sulphur every few weeks - in the dry months you can use just sulphur.

If you want a very long PM about keeping hairy horses mite free with show condition hair, send me a PM and I will send it to you.

Do not leave it - horses left long term with mites get thick folded skin which can be very difficult to treat and can go very sore and infected.

The clydesdale and other heavy breeds are prone to mite reactions.

My Cob used to do this all the time, clipped her legs which helped and also used benzel Benzoate around the area, you can get this from the chemist and is cheap too. Just be warned this is used for treating crabs (humans)..you may get some funny looks..

You can get frontline spray from Pets at Home etc.
Agree don’t leave it. My mare has awful thick skin and deep folds from a lifetime of mites before I had her. I’ve now clipped her feathers off as she had maggots in the folds a couple of times this summer. I cleared the mites with Sulohur dip in the end after nothing else worked.
