sorry just another question. i have spent all week searching the interent to no avail. my new horse stamps his back foot, near side. he does it in the field, when tied up, or when being led. he will be fine then out of no where he wil begin banging it on the floor really hard like something is irritating him. at first i thought was flies but does it when there is none about. i have searched his feathers, and put mite powder on but i dont think it is mites as no sores or anything either. any ideas what it could be or why he does it? thanks

Sorry but this really is usually down to mites and mite powder often doesn't work. I have to get the vet to give my lad two Dectomax injections several times a year to keep it under control. The stamping is usually an effort to stop it itching. Sorry.

sorry! too much wine!!!!

thats how my boy started showing me signs of his stringhault. I thought it was mites and went down the usual mite road of washes, injections etc, then i saw him doing something funny in field and thought it was time to phone vet. vet told me for sure it was stringhault. every day is a school day x

Probably obvious but make sure his sheath etc is clean! My gelding went through a stamping phase, we thought it was mites but it turned out he actually needed a clean, he is much better now - no stamping!

Mites are practically impossible to see, I'm told. A friend of mine has horses who keep getting them - their vet gives them ivermectin injections, but they keep getting reinfested. I think they can live in the bed/stable walls and stuff, but not breed there -much like fleas, bed bugs etc.
