Does anyone have any tips for this.

We started last lesson and it went okay but only with me hooking my forefinger in a neck strap.

Im amazed at how it improved my position and horsey seemed to really go with it, but i seemed to tip forward unless holding the strap. a couple of times we got it perfect, especially in canter, but id just like to know if anyone has a way to improve this?

Is it just balance related, we got such good feedback but i felt rubbish for holding a neckstrap.

And the J word was mentioned... we are coming on so fast!!!

I found it was something that improved over a few sessions - making sure my weight went down my legs into my heel :) I found actively thinking about putting my weight into my heels helped and stopped me pitching forward - hving a horse that tries to break your nose also helped me from going too far forward lol :D

Keep your knees slightly bent and allow them to absorb the movement, this may mean shorter stirrups but I believe it's a jumping related exercise so that should be acceptable.

I also find if my shoulders are just in front of vertical and my bottom just behind i am better balanced but that may be cheating so it will have to be literally 'just' in front and behind!

Practice. If you need neck strap, use it, at least to start with. 1 finger is more psychological as you can't be holding your weight with 1 finger!

Thanks, with the strap i only used one finger as i was doing it one handed.

After it i noticed just how much it brought my heels down and it actually really nice when it went right, and produced a lovely canter out of horsey. just killed my legs though :)

Will definitely be practising the knees bit, i found it really hard to keep them bouncy, which i think tips me forward...

Scared and nervous about jumping, i havent jumped since i was like 9!!!!

Practice :-)

Ideally in a large open field with a horse that won't stop and doesn't have an extended canter/gallop you can sit to.

Seriously though, I was never any good at this in a school until I'd done it on hacks. And you can start to jump without doing it properly... for little ones you just sort of 'skim' the saddle, you aren't really standing at all.

Have fun!

:)

thats the thing with The horse, he does tend to decide ''well i think weve had enough of that now' hence the frankie dettori style one hand on one hand with the whip.
