Tia was a bit of a madam to jump on the weekend - enthusiastic, but not using her back, and being a bit of a silly billy about being asked for right canter. I normally rider her in a running martingale, but she worries when it comes into action and actually chucks her head higher (I leant forward at the wrong moment and got a bloody lip) When she is fighting like that, because of the action of the martingale, I lose any steering too.

Obviously am trying to address root cause of the head chucking - she has an appointment with a sports massage lady asap, but there is a strong likelihood it's the kevins and having a bit of a fliddy because she doesn't understand (she is an ex pointer after all!)

In the meantime I am going to use an elasticated standing martingale instead - haven't tried it yet, but if she gets on well with it, I will want to continue to use it for the time being. Is it BE and/or BSJA legal? Know that the pony club don't allow it for showjumping... but I just want to use it to make my riding clearer - so that I can continue to use the reins, even if she has stuck her head in the air. I also think she is going to prefer the action on her nose rather than on her mouth, as she is very light in the mouth (ridden in a nathe snaffle, and does not pull)

So a) is it legal? and b) does it seem like reasonable useage?

sorry i'm pretty sure the're not allowed any more in comp. But personnel i don't have prob with folks using them instead of getting smacked in face, been there it hurts!
and if it works for horse, can't see any prob in using as part of re-training

yes, I am wary - but since what she doesn't like is the running martingale 'grabbing' the reins, I'm hoping that she finds action on her nose (and elasticated, so not 'snatching' either) clearer. With a running at the moment it is not helping her - she puts her head up, the martingale grabs the reins, so she puts her head higher - not really working.

Not sure what a sheepskin noseband would do

much prefer a well fitted elastic standing to any sort of aid that acts on the reins besides the riders hands. Can you do lots of SJ training and pure SJ with it on and hope horse can cope for one round without it everytime you BE SJ??
