Eric Lamaze had a huge (and sympathetic) round of applause and standing ovation at the Royal Winter fair in Toronto last night
( - by some. Many Canadians, whilst sympathetic to his loss of Hickstead still don't forget, or forgive, his ban)

He placed 10th riding a nice young horse (Herald 3) in the Jolera International Jumper Welcome class.

The Irish rider Dermott Lennon had a very tidy clear to win the class on Loughview Lou Lou.

I forgot my camera so no photos, I'm back there on Thursday night for the mini chuck wagons and hackneys, and whatever else happens to be going on then.

*not very clued up in the world of eventing/showjumping* Why was he banned and why do Canadians hate him?

Anyway, I'm glad he got applause :) I bet he's still very upset about what happened with Hickstead

It's nice to know they gave him a standing ovation, but I do understand the not wanting to forgive; after all he was banned twice, and one of those bans was supposed to be a lifetime ban. But then we might never have seen Hickstead if Eric had been banned!

I don't condone drugs at all, don't get me wrong, but I would be more upset and offended if he had doped the horse rather than himself. Would cocaine be something to enhance his own performance, or is it viewed as an 'upmarket' pleasure/leisure drug? He was an idiot, certainly as it is not exactly a secret that riders as well as horses can be tested, and, having been caught once, it was pretty much a given that he would be tested again. I can only assume that some canadian fans were so angry, and remain unforgiving, because his selfish pleasures could quite easily have robbed Canada of success and recognition as well as himself. That notwithsatanding, I wouldn't have wished his experience at Verona on anyone, whatever they had in their past. And, at some stage, a line has to be drawn under past imprudence.

Nothing to add, except perhaps, "There but for the grace of God, ........ ".

Alec.

He is NOT a drug addict. He screwed up a couple of times after a really ****ty upbringing and then got his act together and worked his arse off for the next 8(?) years to make up for his mistakes.
