I am getting my weanling to eat chaff and sugar beet at the mo to mix a supplement with, she is very fussy so Dengie have sent me lots of samples.

The 3 i have decided to try are HiFi Original with Apple, HiFi Senior and the new HiFi Molasses Free.

So far she has tried and eaten the Orig with Apple, the molasses free with mint and fenugreek smells gorgeous and i think would mask the supplement better but I am concerned that is states that it contains 1.5% starch and 2% sugar. It doesnt sound much but the rest of the Hi-Fi range doesnt state any sugar and starch so I am concerned that this is more than I think.

With development problems rife and my filly having got physitis already should I stear clear of sugar and starch??

xx

If it doesn't state the starch and sugar levels, then you worry!

Hi Fi Mollasses Free states the starch and sugar content as it's suitable for those who are sugar intollerant and laminitics - so people like me who obsess about this stuff, can get their analysis fix :D 2% is very low :D

Good point!!!!!! Never thought about it that way! I suppose that would be the reason for making a molasses free feed! I only give her a handful so would be negligable amounts really.

Thanks very much! :)

But to put it in perspective unmolassed sugarbeet is about 5% and alot of the standard chaffs are 15% upwards.
When mine was on livery he was accidentally fed a chaff that I nicknamed psycho chaff which was 24% sugar - the results were interesting.

Sometimes the only way to get the information is to email the companies and ask.

Ditto this - hopefully if people keep contacting the manufacturers for this information they might eventually put the figures on their websites for all their products!

Mind you, when I emailed Baileys for the starch/sugar levels of some of their products they only sent me the starch content, despite me specifically asking for the sugar level as well.

Hi Fi with Apple is 8% sugar which Dengie advised is a similar level to hay.

Looking for something suitable for laminitics may be a good place to start with feed with low sugar and starch levels. Although I would say if your foal seems to like the molasses free Hi Fi then i'd go with that. :D
