I am just wondering how feasible it would be to start my own business with horses. I am currently doing a degree (in Geography), but after my degree I was thinking about starting a business breaking, schooling, producing, buying/selling, and maybe full livery and pre-training and maybe even point to point training.
I was just wanting to here from people who have started their own business in horse and whether its possible.

I *hopefully* want to get my PTT and stage 4 riding this summer, which then will make me a BHSAI with stage 4. Saying that I don't especially enjoy teaching and would much prefer the competition, breaking and schooling side of things.

I do have a small yard at home, but was wondering if anyone knows about renting yards and what it would cost in the north west/ south scotland region.
Obviously none of this would be in the immeadiate future.
Thanks

Hello, I am in a similiar situation apart from I am on an equine business degree :). Thinking of starting up a similiar business too when i finish, but in south west!!

Anything is feasible :D, to a degree at least :D

So, you'd need some idea of what you would need to cost. Here's the start of a list, not in any order at all:

Insurance - of the yard, of you, of the horses.
Rates - business
Tax - on income, etc.
Staff
Equipment
Horse expenses, i.e. Farrier, Vet (annuals injections, etc.), Physio, etc.
Advertising
Income if you are damaged?
Competition/entry fees.

Try talking to your local Business Link, etc.

Thanks MrsMozart. I have some idea on business rates form my dad who ran a small (car restoration- boring) business. I might try Business Link. I do re-call from somewhere that Grants where given to small businesses setting up, but I am sure these have now been stopped due to the credit crunch??

Right, I promised, so here I am :)
If you have a small yard at home, I would start with that - how small is small and what sort of facilities do you have?
It costs on average £18 per stable per week in insurance and rates just to rent it out, so with your £25 DIY livery, there simply isn't any money to be made.
I know nothing about point to point, so no advice there.
If you are thinking of starting the business, especially breaking/schooling/problem horses type of thing, the most valuable piece of advice I can give you at the moment is, DO NOT ever, under any circumstances write on here about any problems you might have with horses! Reputation and impressions is everything, never discuss clients with other clients or on the net.
As to more practical things, if you would like to ask me some more specific questions, feel free and I will answer to the best of my knowledge :D
