starting a horse on lunging?

well want to start lunging my three year old(3 on 25 august) how would you start him of i had a unsucsessful try today and he just stood there and did not move one bit waving the whip and everything. anyone got any tips?

Get someone to walk round with him to begin with.

I've always started mine by having someone on the ground walking with the horse, just so they get the idea. It's also easier to teach the voice commands with someone to help the horse understand what you mean. I've rarely had to have help more than once, most horses seem to catch on pretty quickly with this method.

You could also try some loose schooling, teach him to move away with you voice and body language, then try it on the lunge.

Do you have any experience of lunging? Get yourself a good instructor and use their experience to get your horse going well and learn from them.
