Hi all, my friend is looking to go bitless with a big Irish draft , anyone know what the best one would be for her, horse has never been bitless and where best to get them from, we have been looking on line but there are a few different types. Thanks

I'd say it really depends on how he goes in a bit. I've ridden bitless for years and years with 3 different horses - all for different reasons - currently, it's just for personal preference. Does the horse pull? have mouth problems? poll problems? or is it just to have a go bitless and see?

Ok - well, probably a good bet is an English hackamore - not too expensive and they can exert a good bit of control, and indeed be quite severe, depending how you use it. I know there's always advice about trying it out in a safe enclosed area first, but with all mine, I put it on and went for a hack. Probably mad idea but all were fine. :D I think there's a psychological perceived lack of brakes thingy that many people have to get over first.

I ride in an Easytrek bitless bridle - same as a Dr Cook's only cheaper. I changed to bitless as my horse has an extremely small mouth and I find anything in his mouth makes him uncomfortable. I went for the Easytrek as I had tried a friend's Dr Cook and both myself and horse liked it, but the Dr Cook was a bit out of my budget!

I also used to have a Micklem bridle which I used with a bit but can be used bitless - but I 'lost' the straps needed to convert to bitless. I loved the Micklem bridle and although quite expensive it does give you several options.

I have a Dr Cook too (quite expensive though) - just thought I'd suggest the hackamore as they are relatively cheap and you can use it with a normal bridle and see how you go. I find the Dr Cook quite weird - haven't used it an awful lot, but it's so light it's amazing for hot summer days - takes a bit of getting used to though.

Thanks all , I will get her to read this later , hackamore sounds best to start with just in case she/horse doesn't get on with bitless.
