I pay £45 a month for both horses insurance with Petplan. My dog insurance with Petplan has now gone up to £38 a month as he is a GSD with hip dysplasia that will probably need surgery at some point. The thing is, this is £80+ a month and my excess are £110 for the horses and £80 for the dog. I don't know whether I would put my dog through painful surgery (hip replacement, would prob pts as he is an outside dog and would hate to be caged for 6 - 8 weeks). Am seriously thinking of stopping insurances and putting money in a separate account "vets fund". Has anyone else done this?

Yes, never insured any horse or dog, far too expensive when you have more than one. You do have to accept that you may have the occassional large bill but I'm sure its cheaper in the long run. Also, I notice that alot of vets will ask you "Are you insured?" before they tell you the treatment

I had the same thought, I mentioned it to my OH, My horse had been insured from 9 months to he was then 10 & had never had to claim or for my old mare who I have had for 18 years, any way I didn't do anything about it, so glad I didn't as 2 weeks later he broke his leg! in the past 4 years I have had 3 big claims for him & there is no way I could have paid them! really would not be with out insurance now, & because of this I have since insured my dog also we have never had any of our dogs insured before. In that time I have also had to make a claim for a young cob I had, she escaped over the fence, & was galloping round a neighbour's garden who was less than impressed! the insurance paid for gardeners to put right the damage!!
