I have this morning been talking to Lee Hackett..... The BHS website is currently experiencing difficulties and therefore have not been able to issue their statement online. However Mr Hackett informed me that as soon as it was ready he would email it to me - So here is the official statement from The British Horse Society

BHS Condemns Return of Amersham Horses

The British Horse Society expresses its outrage at the decision made at Oxford Magistrates Court to return 29 donkeys and Shetland ponies to the family at the centre of the recent rescue operation at Spindles Farm in Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

The January rescue of horses, ponies and donkeys from the premises of Jamie Gray was among the largest ever equine welfare operations to take place in the United Kingdom and saw many different horse welfare organisations working together to seize and subsequently rehabilitate the animals involved.

The decision made at Oxford Magistrates Court to return 29 of the ponies and donkeys to the Gray family, and to have the remainder of the animals sold at public auction, has come as a huge blow to all of those involved with the operation and everybody who is concerned about horse welfare.

BHS Welfare Senior Executive Lee Hackett said “The BHS is shocked and disappointed by the decision to return a number of horses to the Gray family. Whilst we recognise that the trials of those charged in this case have yet to take place, the terrible condition of the animals at the time they were rescued should have been enough to ensure that they remain safely in the care of rescue organisations. This will be devastating news to everybody who has been involved in the care and rehabilitation of these animals”.

“The decision to sell the remainder of the horses, ponies and donkeys at public auction is as mystifying as it is disappointing. We are appalled that these animals will now be put in a position where their future welfare cannot be guaranteed. We fully support the RSPCA’s argument that they should be allowed to supervise the re-homing of these horses to approved homes where knowledgeable and responsible people will care for them. This is the absolute least that these animals deserve.”

Good response - If all the 'official' horse organisations respond in a similar vein perhaps the Judge will take some notice - Ultimately the final desicion will be down to the judge, and often this is not what 'we' the public would hope, however this absolutely beggars belief.

I can't believe the judges decision, These Donkeys and ponnies should not be put back in his hands, or go to auction, let the rescues centers keep them and re-home the ones that can be, The judge his just adding to the crultey, these animals are safe right now, Lets keep them safe

Oxfordshire AGAIN, isn't this the same shire which closed a 2000 year old bridleway forcing riders onto a busy road !!!!! to expand a bloody car factory of all things, with a judge who openly admitted he didn't like horse/riders, the Oxford county councillors also aren't sympathetic to riders, particularly the one I contacted who in a nutshell thinks we should all roll over and give up, now I wonder if this judge ruling on the fate of the Amersham animals is the same one who ruled in Favour of BMW, I can smell shite in the air and it's not pleasant, particularly for the poor animals, this pile of shite called britain beggars belief

, are we missing something here, as commom sense just doesn't seem to be prevailing, is there a larger than normal fraternity of the funny handshake brigade in oxfordshire or are all judges so far removed from reality as I have come to believe.

What an insane decision. Why has the judge come to this decision? Does anyone know?

All those people that have helped provide for these poor animals and looked after them in attempt to restore them to good health and now some of them are being returned to the perpetrators of this terrible case of animal neglect and also will allow them to but them back from the horse sales.

What is going on?

is there anyway the BHS, Redwings, ILPH ect can appeal the decision?

Apparently not under the new welfare act. Which makes a pig's ear of it!

well that is rediculous .

these horse should not be returned OR sold at auction.
poor little mites.
i would quite happily of rehomed one - but i refuse to buy one and line mister Grays pockets with cash

Could the organisations get enough support to raise a petition or even a protest march - if the Countryside Alliance can do it, surely they could. I for one would attend a march.

One assumes the money raised from the sell would go towards paying for the treatment of the animals to good health. I would donate to buy them, but would be so angry if this money went to any member of the scum family involved.

Personally I am sick at the decision - would this happen if it were dogs - I think not.

Have they sent this to the editors of all the tabloids that covered this story in great detail ?

I'm sure a huge public campaign in the popular press would do wonders (here's hoping).

I would assume that all the PR people from the charities concerned would have already sent press releases to all forms of the media seeing as that is part of the press office's job.

Don't suppose the BHS can afford to fight this one after the debacle over the BMW car factory across Bridlepath scenario.

Just another nail in the 'countryside coffin' this seems by government Officials that don't have a clue or a hook on reality.
