Out of interest, when you stay away at shows, what do you do about Hay(lege) ?

In the past we've just stuffed loads of haynets and taken them with us...but just worked out that we would need to take at least 14 pre-stuffed for this weekend's show

We only have huge round bales at the yard, so taking one of those is a no-no. Do people buy from the venue, or something else ? We buy bedding from the centre but not sure if they sell hay(lege)

Any advice appreciated.

Depends on the venue. At Keysoe, for example, the local feed merchants does deliveries to the yard. Maybe worth contacting the venue and seeing what everyone else does. Generally though, we stuff every available orifice on the lorry with hay ...

Is there no one on your yard with normal bales and buy some from them? Probably what i'd do....:)

No.....it's not a DIY livery yard....all haylege is included in the price of the livery.

I have considered trying to find some normal sized bales but not sure where i'd go to get them, or when i'll have time

Good idea...i'll give them a ring and see if they have stocks onsite. Keeping the weight down on the lorry is a priority too, so if i don't have to take the stuff it would be better all round

At Ponies UK Champs we used to take a couple of bags of haylege then buy bays of hay there of course this does rely on there being an onsite supplier. If not we'd do what FMM says and stuff as much as we could onto the lorry. However the overweight issue then comes into play. Where are you going?

Ah in which case you'll have to give me a ring if you get desperate and I'll bring over a haynet!

Seriously I would think Towerlands would have an onsite supplier as they are used to running long shows. Why not email or ring and ask them, they have always been really helpful to me in the past?

If you have to take your own go to either Freshfields at Westfield, Tack Room or Eldridges on the Ridge - they all sell bags of Horsehage (small baled haylage) they are small and compact but it's rich stuff so I usually get the sugar reduced ones (blue) they are about £5.40 a bale but you don't feed that much of it. They are clean and tidy too, better than taking open bales in your newly cleaned lorry!

If the venue doesn't sell haylage then why not buy some Horsehage or similar instead to take with you? Most feedstores these days seem to sell it.

Personally due to taking only one horse in a two horse lorry as I have large bale hayledge as well I simply pile in lots and lots of hayledge into the spare partioned space. I use the outer black plastic from a bale cleverly cut so that it comes up on each side to protect the hayledge incase horse pees. If i run out I will buy more from the venue but when I pay £8 a week adlib and each small horsehage bale costs £5 (dan would have one a night fleur about half!) I much prefer to use the stuff from my yard.

Stuff empty feed/bedding bags/haynets etc and (assuming your lorry is stalled for 3) put it all in the spare stall.
This reason is exactly why I was gunning for a roof rack on the box (sadly I'm without though!

We used to take bales on the lorry roof-rack or if you have space inside the lorry take a few small bales of haylage, stacked neatly they won't take up too much room.

Mine are on hay at home but about 10 days before a stay away (usually a 3DE) they go onto horsehage or whatever other make small bales local feed merchants have. I could pack hay onto the lorry but it makes such a mess that all enclosed nice little haylage bales are so much more practical!!! Also means they can live outside without getting wet when we're there.

For just a night or 2 though we fill empty feed bags with hay and a few nets.
