don't get paranoid! but if these have effect of making you pay more attention to who is round your yard, and make you mark your property, including the horse, then that is a good thing

I am afraid that because the value of horses has gone up so much recently people are starting to steel them again. We have had reports of more horse being stolen this year than each of the previous 5 years. This is a worrying trend. Also they are going for some quite up-market horses as well.

My advice is have your horse frezemarked on it's shoulder and also microchipped. Take a photo of it from the front, back and each side every 6 months.

As regards tack get it post coded and micro-chipped. We recover a lot of tack but unfortunately rarely re-unite it with owners as we don't know who it belongs to.

We also have problems identifying horses thought to have been stolen and proving their identity because they are not freezemarked and micro-chopped.

Another bit of advice is to ask your local police force to stop any horse transporter which are being used between the hours of mid-night and 4.00 a.m. in the morning and then asking asking for proof of identity/ownership of any horses on board.

Remember stolen horses that are not freezemarked are rarely found or recovered.
