I have made a hay steamer following the advice found on HHO - thank you all very much :)

it works a treat, although i wish i had purchased the larger wheelie bin!

My horse loves his steamed hay, he walked straight past some lush smelling haylege to chow down on the warm steamed hay!!

My question is: what sort of shelf life does steamed hay have? is it only good to be fed straight away? or can it be steamed in the morning & fed in the evening? or will it be no good after a few hours?

Sorry if thats an obvious question and thanks for reading - anyone fancy Rocky Road bite size bits and tea?

One of my liveries leaves it prepared. So 10pm haynet i take out ready and give srraight to him. I put the morning 1 in ready. Put the hot water in in morning before feeding. And she prepares the rest around 4-7 depending when sge is there. I would say in colder weather maybe get away with it linger but imo i wouldnt feed more than 24hrs

I steam mine with a wheelie bin and wallpaper steamer and steam it about 9am then hang it in stables for when they come in at 5pm I then either steam their next nets then (10pm nets) or I set a timer for it to steam and finish when I come out at 10..either way they eat it all.

At work we put a timer on the steamer so its always freshly steamed. We do however feed left over hay from the day before to "roughs" in the field and they have never come to any harm!
I Love steamed hay gutted i have no electricity at my yard.
