I've a dustbin with 3 sections of hay squashed into it. How do I go about steaming it properly - it's fairly dusty? How many kettle fulls will I need and how long do I leave it with the lid on before using it? Thanks.
I used a big builders bag, the sort that you can get sand delivered in and a wallpaper steamer. Steamed for approx 30 mins and gave it warm in winter. It worked brilliantly!
Realise a steamer will pump in constant steam at 100 degrees but I'll be using the electric socket in the YO house and was hoping to get away with using a kettle!
Quite a few people do it your way. Pour on a kettle of boiling water then put the lid on for about 20minutes. You'll know when you lift the lid if there is a puff of steam, then it's working. If not, try 2 kettles.
I don't think it's as effective as constant steam being pumped in, but it should certainly dampen down most of the dust. I would give it a good shake first then put it in a haynet before steaming, so that the moisture can get into the middle of the slices, and you aren't left with a soggy mess at the bottom of the bin.
Okay, thanks. Can only give it a try and see how it works. I'll use two bins since you suggest fluffing the hay out first. Was rather a sqeeze getting the three whole sections into one bin yesterday.
