On our walk last night, we took a short stroll around the neighbouring streets. A woman had two dogs--a French Bulldog and a Yellow Lab. While the Lab was peeing in the gutter, the Frenchie stood in the middle of the pavement, staring, crouching low and very stiff in its body language. Stella, of course, took this as a cue to bark like a nutter. So, I told her to shut up, turned around and started walking away.

Next thing, the Lab had dragged the woman all the way to us, and the dog pushed Stella into a storefront and went for her head. I managed to manouevre Stella out of the way with my leg and yank her up by her harness high into the air; thank god she was in a harness because the Lab's jaws were about a cm from her head. (I usually walk her in a collar, but it was being laundered last night.)

Guess we shall we avoiding that particular street in the future

scary, poor little Stella, she doesn't need her nose shortened any more.

Very true

I didn't blame the woman. She was obviously the housekeeper, couldn't speak a word of English, and seemed clueless about the fact that the Lab wanted to kill my dog. I suggested, very nicely, that she should consider a choke chain on the big dog to have better control.

In future, I will react a hell of a lot quicker to a crouched, about-to-strike dog, and not give Stella the opportunity to get all mouthy and make matters worse. This is from a breed guide and is oh-so-true:

"Though the body was bred to a smaller size, the BT still thinks itself to be of the larger size. He has a "big dog" mentality, showing no fear. The Boston is not truly aggressive in nature, but will never back down from a fight if challenged."

Oh no, poor Stella and it must have given you a scare too. Was she shaking afterwards?

No

She was growling and snarling like a Tasmanian devil. I was shaking afterwards, though!

Today was a good day, however--two very nice trips to the dog park. This morning, Stella discovered a passion for blue bouncy balls, which, unlike tennis balls, prompt her to growl and bark while chasing them. She played for over an hour alongside a Golden and a Shepherd, and everyone shared the ball nicely.
