Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of choosing between stem cell treatment or PRP for a tendon injury? I have been told by the vet that either are an option for my horse and I have been doing some research into both but thought it might be worth asking in here? The vet thinks that time will be the most important thing, time and structured rehab but did put these 2 other options down as possibilities.

Has anyone else in here had one or the other done? Or had to choose? I did a search and it didn't bring back many hho results about it, but thought it might be worth asking anyway.

Can anyone help?

Vicki :)

Not experienced choosing between the two but just wanted to say my horse had PRP in about Nov 2012 and it was amazing and was very successful although he has recently been diagnosed with having calcification withint the same ligament (this was not a cause of the PRP just one of those things.).

My horse had prp back in January and was my vet's recommendation over stem cell, which is more complicated and she felt that prp was equally good.
Both treatments are enhancements but there are no shortcuts. The bottom line is indeed time and structured rehab.
For comprehensive advice on sdft injuries I would recommend 'The Bowed Tendon Book' by Tom Ivers.

We tried stem cell for my old boys SDFT injury back in early 2010 but the cells wouldn't grow in the lab which was attributed to his age. We also tried PRP. I don't know if it made any difference but ultimately it was long term field rest which brought him sound (albeit only for several months before he broke down again). The insurance company paid for both.
