My horse is becoming naughty being lead to the field. The field is miles away and down bridleways and across fields, so loads of space to misbehave! I lead him with my mare, both in a bridle. He likewise is fine in a bridle but I am now about to muzzle him so need something else to lead in. I have been recommended a stephens controller h/c, expensive but apparently effective. Does anyone know how they work? Also cant seem to find anywhere to buy one except on ebay. Where else stock them?

Any help appreciated.

I posted about my horrible horse a few days ago. He basically legged it as soon as I got to the field with me, leadrope and headcollar all still attached.
I was recommended a simple old dog choke chain, and guess what it works!! He is a lamb to turn out now. Give it a try before you spend loads of money on expensive alternatives.

As Scotsmare said, either a stallion chain (we used these on my horse at college cos he's a bugger and knows his own strength!) or a simple dog choke chain will work. I have the eskadron headcollar as for £30 I thought was a good deal as, as it has a 'normal' headcollar ring on it as well you can move the clip on to that for tying up etc. Just made it easier for me as we used to just wrap the leadrope round his nose.

I thought the headcollar looked smart and did/does the job - it certainly works with him, although he is trying to find a way round it and constantly 'tests' it!!

Hi thanks for suggestions.

I borrowed someones eskadron headcollar and it was too small. They only come in one size. I have tried a rope over his nose and a stallion chain. If the mood takes him he can still get away from me. He is a real softy but a big horse, and if he gets spooked by a pheasant in the hedge he just takes advantage to p*** off! My reading was that it should not be anymore servere than a chiffney but cannot damage his mouth. 99% of the time he is like a dog on end of rope, but the 1% when he uses his 650 kg against me I have little hope.

Might try a dually. Thanks.

The Eskadron do do more than one size as I got a cob size for mine as thought full would be too big. However, the cob was too small and the full was a bit big so i had our tack shop make it more adjustable (ie remove some of the padding on the headpiece!)

Buy a rope halter, about 5-7 quid from your local tack shop, good thin rope, fantastic things and I haven't had a horse vanish in them yet!
