My big lad has very recently had steroid injections in both of this coffin joints. He has had a few days box rest and is now out in a small paddock. At first he seemed really sore but there is a great deal of improvement now (it's only been four days since the injections).

Vet is due out to check his progress after 2 weeks and then he will have another set of injections after 6 weeks.

What I'm really after is your experiences of this type of injury/treatment and the outcome. Also if anyone has any good tips etc I'd be very grateful to hear them.

Many thanks in advance

My mare was supposed to have these injections in her coffin joint after being on box rest for 16 weeks. Ligament healed but now she's stiff in that foot. This was supposed to help. I decided against it for the time being as she's soooo fat from the box rest that I couldn't take the risk as the side effects are minimum but one being Lami. As my mare is a chunky cob I was worried the risk would be more so i said no. The insurance would have paid this year but she's now in foal instead and we can do the injections next year, hopefully she will have lost weight by then too. Just meand I will have to pay myself.

How much has your injections cost so far?? Hope they work for your lad. Keep me updated. ta x

Hi - my boy had his coffin joint injected with steriods at the beginning of July. Same as you he had about a week in box rest then was out in the day in a small enclosure / back in at night. In the last week I've started to back him and we're going out 3/4 times a week for 10 - 15 minutes slow walks...and he is back out 24/7.

I can't believe the difference in him - I have no idea if he will be sound as I can't trot him for ages but he is so calm and nice now I can only assume he is no longer in pain. Before his injections he was horrible, he would do anything to avoid having his tack on and feet picked out - now he stands like a lamb and has a cuddle to boot! Plus I no longer risk life and limb picking his feet up so I would say he has made a great recovery so far. I'm really worried though about over doing it so am going to stick to walking short amounts 4/5 times a week for the next month or so. I am positive he'll start to display the bad behaviour if his feet take a turn for the worse so I'm using that as a guide.

Vet hasn't suggested seeing him again or re-injecting him either...will mention it to them next time I speak to them.

Sorry that doesn't help you at all but I thought you might like to know I'm in the same situation so will watch this thread. Good luck with your boy
