Everything is covered in lovely welsh mud after the rainfall of the last couple of weeks, so while I was loading headcollars and leadropes into the washing machine last night I was wondering....can you stick bits of grooming kit through the wash as well.

With 6 horses, all living out all in various stages of moulting/mudiness, my brushes look like a battle ground. I am normally a bucket of hot water and dettol kinda girl but is there any reason why they can't go through the wash? Or will this ruin them.

I feel like a bit of numpty asking this, so go gentle, eh! :p :D

I have always put those plastic curry comb type brushes (which I use for the mud on common unclipped horses) in the dishwasher so no reason why not eh? Maybe just try 1 to see what happens or try 1 in the dishwasher (not so much throwing around).

I've put mine in the washing machine(inside an orange washbag) and with a numnah (not in the bag) to absorb clunking/banging and brushes came out fab,in one piece(I was worried the bristles may drop out but they didn't)&cleaner than u could ever get by handwashing them.

did you mean that ?lol

i put horsey stuff in my washing machine but always run a rince cycle afterwards.(as above poster mentioned, when OH is not about cos the buckles rattle.)

I used to make though the dish washer on 40, didn't want to put them in the washer as thought the brisals may come out.

I didn't put them in with the dishes thou.

I do the same with bits and irons, they come out all shiney!

Like Mucky Shavings I put my brushes, hoof picks, stirrup irons etc in the dishwasher. You can place the brushes on the ledges and things don't rattle around.

I do clean out the hair beforehand and put the dishwasher on its hottest wash afterwards and don't tell anyone else that lives in this house!

I put hairy brushes in the washing machine. Don't bother to brush the hairs off either.

THEN .....

I make sure I put hubby's underwear, jeans etc in on the next wash. Make him itch a bit, I say.

I am very, very worried about your washing machines/dishwashers. Mine can't cope with horrid laundry/plates from feral kids. Drain spends its life blocked. So the scud from horses??? Am going to lie down in shock.

I've been doing it for years with no problems, in fact I washed a stable rug twice yesterday and drains are still fine. I put the machines - dishwasher/washing machine through the highest temperature wash afterwards to make sure everything is clean in the machine/s.

Maybe you are letting cooking fats clog up the drains?

can you put cobs in the washing machine? mine could do with a good wash

I always put numnahs, head collars, fleeces, fly sheets etc in a orange bag in the washer. Never tried brushes though.

i have always stuck stuff through in the washing machine, even the rugs now ive got a smallie so they fit (7ft6" dont!)
i also put bits, stirrups & any other metal items through the dishwaher especially the night before a show with the all singing, all dancing diamond ones (makes a fantastic impression:) )

I do all my numnahs & rugs in my washer but never thought of brushes & bits etc in the dishwasher - what a fab idea!!!! Would the rubber treds go in it too or would they go funny with the heat??

Hm.

Good post *turns screen away from D's line of sight :D*

I put rugs and boots and saddle cloths through the washing machine, and bits in the dishwasher (not stirrups though as have Sprenger ones and not sure if it would be a good idea.

Right. Brushes next!

Hm. I wonder what else I could put in either machine and have it come out all sparkly clean :D:D
