Over the last 5-6 uses the jockey wheel on my for 505 has been sticking/grating when trying to wind it up or down.

I thought it was because it hadn't been used as much over the Jan/feb snow/frost . But I'm back to regular (twice weekly) use and its getting worse not better.

Have greased the bottom but the problem is higher up (inside). OH said if I grease or WD40 higher up it might cause the jockey wheel not to work as the winding mechanism might slip. Is that right?

Any suggestions? If not i'll try and take It somewhere but thought i'd ask here first incase there Is an easy/simple solution!

Thanks in advance.

Perhaps try adjusting the actual height of it? On mine if it gets wound up too high it will thread and then it needs adjusted within itself. Hope that makes sense?!

Ah, one thing you can be confident about here - this is engineering so there's an answer - it ain't like puzzling out mysterious lameness or how to do flying changes!

When you have a few moments fully unwind the jockey until the inside separates and the wheel falls out - you may have to chock the trailer and jack the front up to do this - BE CAREFUL!

Once dismantled, clean the thread with a wire brush , grease it and reconnect - remember to wind it in and out a few times to check all o.k.

^^^^ This is what I did. Mine kept getting stuck so while the farmer was here delivering straw he lifted the front of the trailer up on his forklift, I did the above and it's working fine again now :)

There is a ball race at the top of the shaft to allow the handle to rotate freely. It is just below the handle. This can disintegrate. If it feels rough and is getting worse, that would be my guess.

Knock out the cross pin holding on the handle and have a look at the ball race. One of mine went as you describe but I had a spare in the shed and was able to swap the ball races over. It is not a big job. Can't remember exactly what I did but the symptoms sound familiar. A new jockey wheel costs around £50. Plenty on Ebay. But Ifor Williams will probably supply that ball race for a couple of quid.

So, if you drive off with the jockey wheel down (as we all do sooner or later) and bend the shaft, don't throw it out but keep it for spares!

You are a star! Thanks. Xx

Yes, I know! But I'm also an all too human star that once let the five ton muck cart slip off the tractor tow hook on to my foot which I'd left in a very stupid place!! Finding the strength and resolve to put the jockey wheel back down, tighten it and wind the whole lot up off my foot and then cut my steel toe cap off with a grinder was a bit like the bloke who had to cut his own arm off in the film 127 hours!
