Hi I have seen a beautiful pony which I have fallen in love with - but the owner said he has suffered with sticky stifle once before, she said to her knowledge he hadn't had it before, he is now 8 years old. She had him from birth then sold him at 5 to a young boy who has now gone travelling and his mother doesn't want to look after him so has returned him to the breeder. The owner said that he is better if he is kept out and she wondered if it came on when the weather humidity changed a few weeks ago? What do you think? Does this sound like it could cost me a lot of money in years to come?
He is perfect for me and I would really like him but don't want to make any mistakes that I might regret.

Hi, i understand that this is a condition that can improve dramatically with the correct exercise to build up the muscle in the hindquarters and good shoeing. i don't think they rush in to operate these days. if you really like the pony, why not get a vet to look at it and give an opinion. If the pony hasn't been getting much work, just the right kind of exercise could sort the problem out completely. At first,my old horse had a bit of a sticky stifle when stabled overnight which resolved as soon as he'd stretched and walked out of his stable, he was unfit and once he'd got his fitness back, it disappeared completely never to return.

That's interesting oldie48, the other thing is the grazing that he would be going to is quite hilly and I understand that can help with there exercise as well
