Stiff leather

I brought a cheap bridle earlier this year and had the same problem but the only thing I found softened it up was keeping it all done up on the tightest hole for a few days and then just using it... It's now really nice and one of my softest bridles but I think it's a bit like breaking in shoes you just have to get past the horrible stage

I have exactly this problem - neatsfoot oil doesn't seem to be being absorbed at all, just sits on the surface. What do they make these bridles from??

flexalan oil, 2 thin coats on shiny bits 2 thick coats on underside, leave to soak in for a few minutes the wipe off excess and saddle soap as normal. WARNING do not repeat too often as leather will stretch if let too much soak in. Some c**py leather needs "working" a little before it'll take it, either use it or sit playing with it while watching tv.

I always use khochaline on stiff leather. I dug out my old box of horsey bits and bobs when I got back in the saddle again, and the leatherwork was solid! I thought it was done for but tried a decent coat of khochaline and the next day it was v flexible, I did it for a few more days and it came up great.

I think so, an old riding instructor said to use it years ago, showed me a tin and called it that, so I figure it's right! Could of course be like one of those moments when I was very young and my dad told me beefeater hats were made from the black fur of bumble bees......cue me at age of 25 saying at Windsor to some army friends 'wow, it must take a lot of bumble bees to make those hats, I hope it's not real anymore, I love bumble bees' They looked at me in awe when they realised I wasn't joking and actually believed it!
