I hope this is in the right place. We have a 3 year old filly who somehow managed to get in with my stallion over 2 very tall fences and across a ditch and she fell pregnant. The vet was called straight away but said seeing as she is happy and healthy and the foal will have a home for life with us she was fine, so after vet's advice we decided not to abort.

She is very well grown and mature for her age, however we noticed the last couple of days she seems rather stiff in her movement and when picking up her feet. The farrier has commented on her being stiff in her legs once before but we put it down to her hooleying around like an idiot because we had just introduced another horse and she being the boss of the herd saw fit to chase him up and down the fence line!

A little bit about her and our arrangements: She is 3 years old, 4 months pregnant, lives out 24/7 rugged in well drained field with plenty of natural shelter and a dry, warm field shelter with a thick straw bed. She has a 2 year old pony and a 3 year old quarter horse for company.

Feed wise she is on a mostly forage based diet with plenty of grass and hay with only stud balancer and Alfa-Oil as her bucket feed. Character wise she is very laid back and breeding wise she is a halter bred quarter horse. For those who know, she does have Impressive lines but is N/N for HYPP. She is however incredibly muscly and is commonly mistaken for a much older, fitter, in work horse! Weather wise here we have had a fair bit of rain over the last couple of weeks and it has been cold, but would this cause her to be stiff?

We are really at a loss as to why she could be so stiff, could it be the extra 'baby weight', or the weather, perhaps her symptoms are exaggerated by her large muscle structure?

We are phoning the vet for on Monday but I wondered if anybody had any possible suggestions in the meantime. Other than being stiff she is very happy in herself, eating well and cheerful.

I don't know what HYPP is but EPSM is, apparently, common in quarter horses and some of what you describe is symptomatic. Have you wormed her recently, that can set off the "tying up" type symptoms. And they require a low carbohydrate diet, with oil and vitamin E too. Plenty of grass can be an issue as well. Maybe the baby has brought it on???

Thanks for your quick reply. My understanding is EPSM is not great and she has not been tested but as far as I know neither her sire or dam have it, is it hereditary? I will check with the stud though.

She hasn't been wormed that recently, it was about 3 weeks ago. When the farrier first mentioned her seeming a little stiff it was back in the summer, long before she got pregnant but it is possible that it has made it worse.

She doesn't really seem all that reluctant to move but when she does it's stiff movement. When I picked out her feet it was like trying to lift a puppet's leg! She has a reputation for being 'the delicate flower' of the field but this is not like her.

I don't know if it's hereditary but I did find out that QH and draft horses are prone when I had one with some symtoms. If you google it you'll find out plenty, it's reasonably easy to control in most horses with a high oil, high vitamin E and very low carb diet (which can unfortunately mean fairly severe grass restriction :( ).
