Stifle Arthroscopy- Experiences

Hi Guys,

My horse is, as we speak, under going an arthroscopy on both stifles.

Can people please give me your experiences and out comes.

To say i am gutted is an under statement.

He was sound and competing at county level last season, he had a holiday when he was brought into work he didnt feel ''right''

Took him to vets for a full work up as vet suspected something wasnt right in both front feet. As soon as they flexion tested the backs he showed up very lame in the back right, mildly in the back left. This is turn is throwing him off on the front.

Hes 10 year old, Ex racer. From what the vet says stifle problems are quite common in ex racehorses.

I am still in shock. :(
 
my old horse had stifle OCD, came on at 9 years old. steroids hadn't done anything and he was almost non-weighbearing lame on occasion. they couldn't do much surgically with my particular horse but IRAP really helped him-after a good deal of rest and rehab he came back into light schooling and hacking work after a very poor prognosis. good luck!
 
Field sound is good enough for me, its just the not knowing that is driving me mad. It has all come about so quickly.

The vet said the IRAP will probably be next after the op to clean up the joint.

He went into thearte about 9.30-10.00 and still no phone call. Does any one know how long the surgery takes?!

depends on what there is to do. I know exactly how you feel and I suggest that you ring them if you've not heard anything after 3pm-sometimes an emegency comes in and they get busy etc.

My horse was pretty bad-such a big lesion they didn't hold out any hope he'd come sound but he did eventually or as near as dammit.
 
Just had the call!

He isnt out of the woods as of yet but he is out of surgery and standing.

He has a large tear down his cruciate ligament. The other stifle is imflamed and angry due to him compensating.

Just waiting for the call later to discuss a detailed after care but all being well i can bring him home in 2/3 days :)

And Breatheeeeeeeeeeeeee............
 
my horse tore his cruciate and was diagnosed with bilateral OCD at the same time aged 8. He had a period of box rest then a long time in the field before gradually bringing him back into work. Unfortunately he never quite came sound but he is still living a happy life. He is sound in the school, just not on a hard surface. He is 11 now and this winter I took him hunting again a couple of times and he does fun rides and jumps. You just have to not look too closely when he trots down the road.

Star- Thank you. You have given me the slight bit of hope i needed. After reading numerous vets reports it seems that they normally become atleast field/light hacking sound. Which is a good enough reason to keep trying for me :)
 
Hi our pony had the same problem end of last year ..op was in November now back in full work and slowly starting jumping again.
Taken things very slowly. He was on boxrest with in hand walking for 4mths then pen turn out for a month now out in small paddock ..

Baily- thank you! It's so good to hear of something positive :) picking him up tomorrow then the aftercare sounds very similar to the plan you had
