After a week of watching and monitoring some unexplained unsoundness (on vets advice), we now suspect my mare has injured her stifles.

It is suspected that she has slipped in the field and over extended the joint, so could be a simple strain ( I hope, but I have a funny feeling it is something not so simple). She is now on box rest and bute, and a lot happier - as long as you don't touch this area. The vet is coming out on Monday, so I am still waiting for confirmed diagnosis, prognosis and everything else that is going to be thrown at me.

With this in mind, I am interested to hear of others experiences.... the good and the bad.

I have never had a horse break on me this way and now I feel lost, confused and very very worried.

It could be alsorts, I have had a mare tear a ligament in her stifle, end of career. It was misdiagnosed as hock spavins for a month so the 'hard work' over raised trot poles really didn't help. She went to Newmarket and had arthroscopy to diagnose.
I also have a youngster with OCD, stifles and hocks. The one stifle is the worse, it has cracks in the cartilage so will render him useless at some stage, he is just backed at 4 yrs.
I do hope your horse has just pulled something, and bute and rest will sort it out.

my 8yr old has just been diagnosed with bilateral stifle OCD and an inflamed cruciate ligament in his left hind. he has 5mths off now and is still lame :(

I knew a gelding who came in from the field with both stifles strained. They thought he had slipped in field and done the splits as it was the only way the vets could explain what he had done. He had box rest, physio, a wee bit of time off and then was brought back to work slowly. He was sound and had no further issues.

I hope its something that simple for you... <<<hugs>>>
