Hi my 4year old native has injured her stifle - not sure how. She was 3/10 lame so hardly hopping but had a horrible rolling action and looked in pain therefore vet out and now on box rest and bute with another visit in 10 days to check for any improvement. However the vet said she could feel slight fusion in the joint but wasn't sure if that was because she was 'over feeling'. Stupidly I didn't ask her to clarify as agreed with her that rest was good start before starting taking things further. So does anyone know what it is exactly and any experiences? I thought it was a surgical procedure and shes def not had surgery before! Maybe I miss heard her!
Maybe I should add that this mare has very straight limbs and action and hasn't even started working properly yet.
Sorry this probably sounds really stupid and not making much sense but I thought it was worth an ask.
Thanks for reading

Thanks feeling stupid now!! Definatly mis heard her! Filling is the same as effusion isn't it?

More or less! But a vet can't say 'filling' and charge you a small fortune!

Bute and box rest is a good start, but I think I'd want the stifle x-rayed sooner rather than later. Effusion around the stifle joint along with slight lameness is often an indication of OCD - if she has a chip it will need removing before she starts work. Surgery has a good result - as long as it's done before a chip has a chance to cause damage to the joint.

Thanks! Sorry haven't been on here for a while. She was looked at today with significant improvement (bute finished 2 days before his visit) so he is going to hold off the xrays for time being and she is to stay on box rest for another week then yard rest for another 3 weeks. He gave her a really good all over check - back, pelvis etc. He said 50% of stifle injuries recover themselves like this and as she isn't your typical fast growing breed he said not to worry about developemental problems at the moment. She actually seems to enjoy being in all the time but its frustrating!
