Hi all. My horse had an accident on the weekend as a result of the front part of his stable which is made from blocks collapsing. We don't know how it happened, think he may have been leaving on it. He had a lot of superficial cuts. He was quite lame on his left hind. I had the vet who gave an anti inflammatory and antibiotic injection and put him on courses for both.
I had the vet again yesterday as he has quite a swollen stifle. Vet x-rayed, couldn't see any bony changes but is worried as the effusion is right over the joint. He is now 3 tenths lame so has improved in that respect. Has anyone dealt with a similar injury?hes only 6, am gutted 😐

Stifles are a ******.....maybe an ultrasound scan to check to see if there is any meniscal damage? The area is hard to image though.....especially in the bigger, heavier horses (not sure what you own). With a stifle injury I would involve a referral vet sooner rather than later as if arthroscopy is required, the sooner the better.

Hopefully however he has just bruised himself and it's nowt more.

I had the same problem, the stifle on mine also locked for a short time leaving her with an odd string halt gait. We think she had done a violent skidding stop and her hinds slid past her fronts.

She improved quickly but still went in for investigations, they found a tiny bone chip and injured meniscus.

I too went through a similar situation with my 6 yo a couple of months back, A.Alice was kind enough to share her experiences. Mine slipped in the field and ended up very lame with an intermitently locking stifle. He was put on bute and restricted turnout for a week, I had X-rays and ultrasounds done which thankfully showed no obvious damge. The excellent news is he came completely sound within two weeks and has remained so since, I really hope that you and your boy have a positive outcome :-)

Thanks all. Am still cold hosing, I think the swelling may have reduced slightly, vet again Friday, may get him to bring ultrasound to check.
