My friend has a five year old (2006 reg) who has been diagnosed with probable OCD of the stifle joint. The diagnosis was made on the characteristic toe-out movement and his history. The horse is uninsured and he was turned away for the winter on vets advice in the hope that, being young, it would come sound with rest.
The history is that the mare was given baytril for an infected hock joint, with a flush done twice, for several weeks in a row (she came home with a 500ml bottle of it - replaced when empty I think - and a catheter in her neck) when the now 5 year old was in utero. The mare was put in foal due to retiring with spavined hocks at 14 (I know, I know, please don't go there ....)
The father failed in his promising professionally ridden eventing career, after the foal was born, with the local grapevine indicating this was due to unsoundness in the hind limbs, probably hocks.
The 5 year old had a tendon snip for locking patellas on both sides at 2 years old. His conformation is fairly straight in the hind leg, though not drastically so.
He now "plaits" behind - places his hind feet under him in a straight line, and it is possible to see his stifle on one side "stick" and then release if you look carefully when he is turned on a tight circle.
To save the family needless expense and yet more anxiety over this horse, I'm looking for some advice for them before he is seen again by the vet tomorrow (Tuesday).
Vets and people who have had horses with this problem before please -
is it at all likely that this horse will ever event at BE90?????????????
Your opinion and experience would be very much appreciated.
