As some of you will know my wee mare suffers from laminitis, I have just about managed to get the lami under control however she also has a locking stifle joint and the increased time shes spending in her stable seems to be making this worse!! How can I help this? Can anyone recommend me a good supp? Shes ridden sixtimes a week usually four hacks between forty mins and an hour and a half in walk with hillls and two light schooling sessions.....x

I'd love to know the answer to this. Mine been on box rest for 7 weeks now cause of fracture to the cannon and as a result his locking patella has worsened! Makes me sad seeing him "stick"
I was advised as much turnout as possible and also hill work

The only thing that can help is as much movement as possible. Are you able to turn her out on a bare paddock (or close to bare), bare yard or muzzle her so she is able to move more? If you can fit in more work generally either riding or long reining or even leading out will also help.

Unfourtantly it doesn't matter what you feed her. If she can't move and walk around it will stick. Could she not be turned out in the menage or the yard (if its safe to do so and she can be fenced in) If not, I would in hand hack (withs your vets permission first)

Thanks for your replies folks.....even if they are a bit worrying :(

Her current routine is out in a wee bare paddock that is cross grazed with sheep with a muzzle on for half an hour in the morning and the same again in the evening. Any time Ive tried to increase her turn out time she starts to feel her feet again! She is ridden as much as I can manage due to work, I have a teenage girl who also exercises her when she can and Ive posted an ad looking for someone else to exercise her during the day when Im at work. Not had any responses yet though.

Im nagging the life out of the farmer to build an non grass turnout area for her to go in but until/if this happens she is going to be stuck in her stable for most of the time I think :( there isnt any yards in my area with non grass turnout and even minimal grass seems to give her lami! We have an indoor school and this is used for storing hay and haylage so she cant go in there.

Would supplemts not help at all? Ive started doing some pole work with her and she hacks up and down hills all the time.

x

How old is?

I would suggest moving yards to accommodate her needs tbh, but i know circumstances are not always perfect :)

my greys stifle was quite sticky but after some work she was totally fine, has 24/7 turnout etc didn't work her for about a week and the weather is turned so she's been standing still rather and moving and it's back again.

I'm not too worried about it though :) i know it'll clear up with work :)

don't panic over it :)

I think it's to do with the ligaments needing to strengthen rather than anything a supplement can help with :)

this threat helped me out :) http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=460306

agree with this

Shes 11.

Had a look at link to thread, what is "Boswellia serrata?"

Ive looked about at yards and if I could find somewhere better for her id move! Thing is there really isnt any yards in my area that have any form of turnout that isnt on grass. Theres one yard that has tiny non grass pens but you have to use their haylage and haylage gives her lami! Plus at least here I am has fab off road hacking so at least she can go out long hacks.

Kinda feel that im banging my head against a brick wall the now.........not sure what else I can do apart from muddle on and nag the farmer to build me a turnout area with no grass......:( x

It's about strengthening the ligaments and the muscles that move the patella so no supplement or feed will make a difference. It is down to exercise unfortunately :(
Good luck with getting everything under control
