Thanks for ur advice x x

Is the hay new hay or old hay? It may be that it has got a musty smell and he isn't interested. Also check there is so other animals weeing on it as the smell will put him off (ie dogs). Have you tried a different bale?

could you try haylage - a horse on our yard went off her hay (again young) and she would only eat haylage for a while. The fussy thing has changed her mind again now though and is back to hay Hmmm

its the hay off my fields so its hasnt been anywhere other than on field now in barn its new , i have given him haylage he just picks at everything . thanks

My horse was right off hay and I was wondering how I was going to feed him this winter - I was just using some of last years hay up but then I changed to my new hay and he has been woofing it up - it is softer and greener and obviously more palatable. Have you tried steaming - I find that makes it more palatable too. I stick the sections into a wheelie bin and I poor 1 kettle full of boiled water to each section of hay and shut the lid and leave for approx 20 mins to half hour. I then tip it up so that the hay lands onto the lid - hay presto - lovely steamed hay!!
