So this is Silver's third day of being... not right. Vet is convinced he has an abcess in his near fore as although sensitive on all four feet with hoof testers he said this was the most sensitive, so have been tubbing and polticing for 2 nights and 1 day now, nothing appearing. Both feet are the same temp, and no differences in the pulses of either fore. He is on 2 x bute a day and although he seems quite abit better he is still wrong. I have a uploaded a wee video of him walking in today for his breakfast (just removed poltice), yes the ground is slightly sloped and uneven but less than a week ago he was prancing over it like a 5 yr old.
He is in a mud paddock with hay so no accsess to grazeing, not moving around much and not being quite himself. Still bright with an appetite... I'm stumped and worried about him.
I am not happy with the vet as he didn't do a full check, refused to take temp etc on the grounds that ''90% of lameness is caused by an abcess in the foot''. Ok so he is lame but I know there is something else!! *bangs head on wall* can't get a seniour vet untill tuesday now as he is non emergancy, so just have to battle on with the bute and TLC.
He is due a trim next week so at least i'll have the farrier to cast an eye over them, i'm aware his toes are ever so slightly long but the Vet didn't think was a cause...

The video is abit pants sorry, just to give an idea of how he is walking. He hasn't got as much spirit about him as yesterday, almost like the pain is getting to him...

He does look a bit pottery but I would have preferred to see a side view.

If I were you, I'd keep him on box-rest on a deep shavings bed, feed plenty of well-soaked hay , just in case and wait for the farrier. I once watched my farrier discover 2 abcesses in a sedated Clydie mare, when the vet hadn't been able to find one, so it could be an abscess but I'd want to be on the safe side. If he gets any worse, I'd be ringing the vet and insisting that a good equine vet came out.

Funny..same thing happened to mine last year same diagnosis from vet. no sign of abcess at all but after a couple of days poultice and box rest she came right imo she had something up between her foot and shoe (she had wedges on) also and not to worry you but she had laminitis in one foot before (shes a 16hh tb) did thevet consider that?

I believe that bute can slow down the development of an abcess, so if the vet is convinced that's the problem I'm surprised they told you to give him bute?

My big mare went dead lame, couldn't find a thing. She wasn't sore to hoof testers at all and her leg was swollen so she was prescribed bute. After a week of no difference we took her off it and 2 days later the abcess burst out through the top of her heel bulb. I'm convinced it would have burst sooner if she hadn't been on bute, saving her days of discomfort.

yes sorry I was walking backwards filming :o. I would love to box rest him but he seizes up completly in the stable, his back legs fuse up and then he lies down and casts himself! I am polticing both fronts, he seems quite content wondering around nibbling hay in his little paddock with his silly boots on! Which again is not like him as usually when he is away from the herd is an unmangeable lunatic!! He just has a shetland for company and seems very sedate...

sychnant this is what I have also been told, but the vet said he was clearly in pain so to bute him... Whenever he has had abcess before like your mare he has a swollen leg and a very clear pulse (not ruling out obv but perplexed how the symptoms are showing).

amymay my digital thermometar was giving me readings of between 35 - 39' but i don't quite trust it to be 100% accurate. He just hoof tested and felt the pulses, prescriped polticing and bute and to call after the easter wkend...

He said at 26 the only reason for lami would be underlying cushings so not to be too concerened at this time... And to treat for abcess/bruised soles for now...

why would the only reason for lami be cushings at 26  I really don't think that would be the case, and if he does have undiagnosed cushings why would that make any lami he had less of a concern?

He does look uncomfortable given the two bute a day and I don't think I would be happy leaving him until tuesday as he is currently. If he does have lami surely that makes him into an urgent case and it certainly seems the most likely if he reacted to the hoof testers in all four feet.

Agreed - lami is an emergency - as much so as colic IMO - i would ask for a second opinion from a different vet.
With 2 bute a day i would expect a huge difference in how comfortable he is- it sounds like without bute he'd be awfully lame.

To add - if it is lami i would be wanting him tested for Cushings too.

I really don't know he just seemed completly unconcerned for what ever reason...
I'm not happy leaving him till Tues at all but on speaking to a partner he says he trusts the judgement of his colleague and I could have the same vet out tomorrow at the earliest. On a bank holiday, call out is time and a half... So over £100! I really really can not afford that, for the same vet to tell me the same thing. I'm to keep polticing and buteing him... Goodness it will make my year if over the weekend the abcess/abcess' burst and he improoves. I will eat my words! But atm i'm just not sure! Extremely frustrating!

In that case i would do as the vet says but treat him like a lami case at the same time.
2 birds one stone...both bases covered.
