Years ago I used to have a light I attached to my boot for riding out which had a red light to the back and a white light to front. Have been looking for something similar but can't find anything. Any suggestions as to lights for hacking out? Don't go out in the dark dark but would quite like to have a light again for those slightly darker mornings. Horse and I are both hi vised up to our eyeballs and beyond! Thanks.

You get various bike lights that attach with velcro bands, or elstic straps that loop round - they might be useful. I have seen them in places like Home Bargains for very little money, as well as 'proper' bike places. I have a red LED light on an adjustable strap for running - from Decathlon. It can be set to steady or flashing.

I have a couple of very cheap bike lights that I stuck on my stirrup - a white one pointing forward and a red one pointing back. They were something like £4 each from Go Outdoors.

I remember stirrup lights being one of the essentials mentioned in all my pony care books from the 70s/80s - I'm not sure where they've all gone!

(Edit: They are quite bulky - I could get away with it because my stirrups were little too large, but another woman on the yard had to buy bigger stirrups.)

I've just bought some bike lights from Halfords for my daughter to use for riding after school when it is getting dark. They were £7.99 for two, with a slide clip attachment, and they are lovely and bright, flashing or steady light.

Isn't it a legal requirement to have lights on your horse when out at dark? (Possibly dusk too, I'm not au fait with it though!)

I'd also def attach lights to the horse, perhaps not just the stirrup in case something goes wrong and you come off?

Aldi often to strips of flashing lights for runners, I think £4.99 for 4. I put two around a hat, one around an arm, one around an ankle or horse's leg. You can replace the batteries and they show up well.
