Hi.
Have decided that since i'm going to be hunting more this season that i'm going to treat myself to a new shirt and a new stock. Just thought i'd find out what everyone else tends to wear as in my circle of friends everyone seems to have different attire.

Does everyone else tend to wear plain white stocks? I've just got a basic white one at the moment although it has seen better days but i've seen people hunting in spotted ones or silk ones.
What sort of shirts do people tend to hunt in? Plain White Mr Fox type hunt shirts, the thicker ones or more like a sports/showing shirt?
Excuse the slightly mundane questions but there's so much choice on the market nowadays that i don't really want to end up with something which is frowned upon colour wise etc. :)

It depends really on if your wearing a black hunting jacket or a tweed jacket. Black you should go with a plain white or cream stock, but im sure a patterns ok. Tweed you can have coloured or patterned.

I wear a traditional white one, but I wear a showjumping shirt under! With lots of a layers though, personally i'd reccomend a proper warm hunting shirt :)

A white stock should be worn with a black or navy coat during main season (i.e from the Opening Meet until the end of the season) - coloured or patterned stocks are reserved for wearing with tweed jackets. Never wear a white stock with your tweed.

If you are doing your hunting in the winter months from November onwards then invest in a warm hunting shirt, with a waistcoat, some thick breeches and a decent coat that should keep you toasty warm. The shirt can be any colour you like as it won't be seen under your coat - most of them come in either canary yellow or white, although you can get some rather more expensive ones in blue or check from places like Oliver Brown.

If you are only going to be wearing tweed for autumn hunting, then a cotton shirt with a tie or a show jumping style show shirt would be okay as the weather (in theory) warms up as the morning progresses!

Some hunts also revert to ratcatcher in mid-march until the end of the season, which is tweed jacket with the coloured stock or shirt and tie.

Good luck and if you are in any doubt, give the secretary a bell and she will give a few pointers. Enjoy yourself.

White or cream stock either cotton or more expensive is silk. As for hunt shirts the Mr Fox thermal ones are fab. But Shires do one that is good and quite inexpensive. I dont like patterned stocks with navy or black jackets. As for the colour of the shirt it doesnt really matter because it will be under your coat. I would also recommend a waist coat under your hunt coat to keep you a bit warmer.

Thanks for all the replies.
Claire - thanks for the reply, have already done a bit the last two seasons so already got all the necessities, just wanted to up date them a bit :O) I was really asking as our group all tend to wear different types of shirts and stocks.
Think i'll probably just get a new white stock and new Mr Fox type shirt then. Probably invest in a coloured stock ready for tweed time too. Already got the hunt coats black and tweed, breeches and decent boots, just about to buy a waistcoat too so should be all set up for the season :)

I just use a plain Caldene stock shirt, with a ski thermal tshirt underneath. I do feel the cold alot, and this keeps me warm with a snug wool navy coat.

Mr fox shirts with a cream silk stock. If it's quite warm early or late in the season then I wear a caldene show shirt or a normal cotton shirt with a tie if ratcatcher time
