Stocking a first aid kit....

Hi,

Want to stock my own first aid kit having relied on my YO (who doesn't mind and I always replace what I use) I would like my own after not being able to find a thermometer at the weekend.

I have:
Latex Gloves
Gold Label Iodine based antiseptic (I am not sure it is strong enough??)
Thermometer (went out and panic bought one, of course he didn't have a temperature)

what else do I need and are there 'non horsey' equivalents? (i.e not animalintex etc)

There are no horsey equivlents for animalintex, and bandages for humans tend to be small and expensive, I use Betadine spray and wound wash spray, marigolds don't rot in the first aid box. I get my saline and my wound gel from the vet.
 
Thanks Miss L Toe, good to know about the animalintex, won't waste my time shopping around :)

Will be seeing vet soon so will ask about the saline and wound gel :)
 
No kit is complete imo without green oils, wonder gel. Witch hazel and arnica gel, wound powder, vet wrap, hydro sterile gel and a bottle of sterile water. Also gamgee (use the baby cotton wool - lots cheaper). Tweezers are very handy too, also scissors and purple spray, wound cream, and my favourite thing and never without and use on kids, dogs, me and horses is iodine spray, doesn't sting too much and touch wood keeps it infection free. Also fly spray to apply near wounds to stop flies getting in there

And Lurcher I have been racking my brain about greenoils! I used to have it with my previous horse and couldn't remember it!
 
Sudocreme,
dermosolve cream,
wonder gel (no need for arnica and witchazel its in the wonder gel),
duct tape,
vet wrap,
melolin squares,
scissors,
tweezers,
vaseline,
big jar of salt (for flushing out wounds with warm salt water),
sterile gauze as well as cotton wool roll.

Not quite, was supposed to be trying 'the one' tonight but got rained/stormed off! Owner is bringing him to me on Sunday :) First aid shopping is guiltless shopping fix!!

He is on the link below, I have ridden him on the flat, I just need to see if we click jumping and get him passed a vetting!! Love him :)

OOOh he's gorgeous!! love a big ginge....and he looks huuuuuuge!!:D Ill keep my fingers crossed sunday goes swimmingly for you both!
 
Adding to the above
Hibiscrub
Set of stable bandages & pads
Nappies (good for covering foot poultices)
Bandages & dressings from b&m or pound shops.
New sponge kept in sealed bag it comes in.
I keep a new bucket in a thick plastic bag too, so in an emergency it just needs a quick rinse with boiling water, rather than a scrub.
Gaffer tape.
Dermobion, but I 'overstocked' from vet!
Big sterile syringes, handy for cleaning wounds & getting powders down.

Second this and plenty of duct tape.

Hibiscrub
A small tub e.g. ice cream size for diluting hibiscrub with water
Cotton wool rolls for bathing and wrapping- they are easier to wrap around the leg than gamgee as the cotton wool sticks to itself - most vets use them but of course once used cannot be rolled up and used again.
I also use melolin non adherent dressings for humans and micropore tape
Latex free disposable gloves
Vetwrap or similar
Antispetic such as dermagel or similar
Get antibiotic creams from chemists abroad or my sister brings a tube over from America when she visits.
Blunt ended scissors

Mine got slashed on barberd wire (/new yard wasnt told it was buried in the marsh) last tuesday, green oils has been a god send, especially on the wound on her leg that wouldnt heal (not helped by her hedge hopping ) and it does double up as a fly repellent :)
 
I have plasters and paracetamol for me! Plasters seem to have a multitude of uses as well as the obvious!

My essentials are sudocreme, cotton wool, bandages, hibiscrub, bute, scissors, duct tape, wound cream & surgical spirit

I also have Sedalin and a heavy duty sedator, wound washes and I'm not sure what else, but it is pretty full!
