Just a word of warning - someone is stealing the drain covers from the verges in the lanes around here - (near Heathfield, East Sussex) - and are then restealing them as soon as the council replaces them. Apparently the council is now using concrete slabs..Currently we have traffic cones on the open drains - in some places that's about one every 20m.

We only found out when a workman came running up the road to us as we hacked out, leading one along the verge, to say watch out for the uncovered drains!

Apart for being obviously illegal, and down right stupid, can you imagine what would happen if your horse lost a leg down a drain?

So please please don't assume the covers are on the drains, give them a wide berth (which my mare does voluntarily!) and keep your eyes peeled

wierd but by way of hacking v dangerous thanx for warning

and just for a rant why why why would you bother to spend your time stealing DRAIN COVERS. WHY do it? WHAT is the point they are trying to make?!!!

Apparently its for the scrap value (?) as some old ones in rural areas are still cast iron, but they seem to still want the new ones (silver colour)....really worth risking a criminal record for eh?

We had the same about 2 weeks ago (Essex) - they still haven't been replaced and just have cones on them.

I work in manufacturing and the worldwide price of both steel and cast iron (and just about every other metal) is rocketing upwards.

It does beg the question, who accepts a flat bed load of drain covers and does not ask the obvious question.

Yep it's the price of scrap metal. Round us loads of the aluminium chevron road sings have been half inched and we all know who's doing it don't we but not PC to say!

Exactly! What would happen if scrapyards did not accept drain covers etc? There would not be a market for them. Around here gas pipes are ripped from peoples hoses., electricity cables taken whilst still live. I don't know how they have not got fried or blown up.

Someone was caught a while ago removing the chevrons from roundabouts in Birmingham, as they were made of aluminium. A lot of Local Authorities are starting to use GRP, as there is no scrap value!

A few years ago, a family of a certain ethnic / cultural background tried to sue SWALEC (as it was then), as their son has received fatal burns whilst on SWALEC's property. The case did not get anywhere, as SWLEC's solicitor pointed out that to get onto the property (a large electricity sub station) the young scamp had excavated a tunnel under a fence which went down two feet into the ground, navigated through a razor wire barrier (WW1 style) and had then received the burns whilst trying to remove the copper from the inside of a LIVE transformer running over 11 kVA (lots of electricity).
