I do hope Jen is found safe and well, but have to wonder at the sort of home she comes from if she is regularly left alone in a farm building from 8am-midnight :( What about exercise, stimulation, food?

Trying not to be judgmental, maybe (hopefully!) it was a one off as the owners were away for the day.

Even at this busiest time of year for us with lambing, our trained sheepdogs are out in the Landrover (usually 2-3 at a time) with my husband checking on ewes and lambs and the young untrained dogs/pups are in their kennels/runs and being let out at least 3-4 times a day for a blast around, to toilet and they are fed early evening.

Maybe it's a typo, and they mean 8am - midday?

Otherwise, I'd be wondering the same as you.

There were a number of dogs, including young puppies , stolen from a "breeder" recently. The times stated were something like between 6pm and 9 am, and like this case you do wonder what sort of care the dogs had prior to being stolen, though of course not condoning their theft at all.

When my mum lived up in rural Co Durham we used to find the conditions some of the collies were kept in very sad. I know it was a very poor area and the people were scraping by but the farm and smallholding near her both had very poor conditioned and badly kept dogs.

the timing is more confusing as did they go to check on the dog at midnight and then realize it was gone?

obviously hope it turns up all ok soon.

It is normal on a farm around here for bitches in season to be locked in a container 24/7. I hear them and I find it pitiful.

I am also struggling at the moment with my best friend, who is keeping a year old border collie in a cage with no bedding all night and most of the day. I just don't know what I can do about it, but it really upsets me. I've tried gently asking her why the dog is caged and she says it rips things up if it's not.

Hmm.... I rehomed a 15 month old collie last year and was told he ripped up his bedding all the time. He hasn't ripped up one single thing since being here. I assume canine company and having a job to do is what has made the difference.

For what it's worth though, my collie will often lie on the tiled floor in preference to his bed especially when it is warm weather
