Thanks to some excellent work by Hampshire Equine Liaison and Countrywatch officers Three stolen Ifor Williams HB505R horse trailers were seized at the Wickham horse Fair yesterday in Hampshire.

I am sure you will agree that this is good news but it could easily have been more

An appeal from Jon Radcliffe Countryside and Wildlife Crime Officer:

What assisted us in this was that chassis numbers had been recorded by the owners and reported to police. Please make sure that you record all numbers or individual marks on property. Take photos of it! It makes it easier to identify. You might think you look daft taking a picture of something like a chainsaw or hedge trimmer, but it does help to identify stuff!

It's going to be a lovely weekend so spare a little time to protect your property even if you paint a postcode on a strimmer!

Equally if you are offered a Trailer that is far too cheap there is probably a reason for it so don't add to other peoples mysery and walk away, but don't forget to let the police know as well!

I hope they are returned directly to their owners and haven't been damaged in any way.

A friend had hers returned many weeks after it had been taken. It was found and siezed in Hexam, having had some serious structural 'amendments'. In spite of having all her trailer's details (presumably to circulate around forces) the force which had found and impounded the trailer billed her for the weeks it had been waiting securely to be reunited with its owner. Not only had she moved on and bought a lorry, she had to pay a substantial sum to have it released and then towed home - by this time (months) she had sold her towcar. The Ifor was chopped about and really only fit to scrap.

That's very strange as if an insurance policy has paid out, the Trailer becomes the property of the Insurance company? I would have taken that up with the police as those sort of costs should have been billed to the person unlawfully having the trailer. It was probably and admin error and contacting the officer that seized the trailer or a supervisor should have sorted that out and she could have arranged for a scrap merchant to collect the trailer straight from storage, it's not her fault that it took time to trace her.
