I'm sorry this has happened, it's horrible to discover your trailer is missing, we lost our IW some years ago and had the replacement postcoded on it's roof with two feet high letters. (Police advice)
I wish people realised they need to have a wheel clamp on the back wheel plus a hitch lock, ours had just the hitchlock and the bast**s simply looped a chain round it from a small hoist on their flatbed lorry and towed it that way on it's back wheels only...
We didn't get ours back but were advised many trailers go straight over to Ireland from Stranrae never to be seen again.
I would publicise the theft anyway you can and hope someone spots it.

i am so sorry. The thieving scum who took my stuff and others nearby probably had filled their van and now need a bigger container to carry around their loot.
I hope it gets found very soon.

I am sorry to hear you have been a repeat victim of crime. Did you take a note of the serial number for the Trailer?

PLEASE everybody take note that it is a lot harder to recover Trailers when they are not marked or the unique serial number is not available. In Hampshire over the past couple of years we have recovered a number of stolen trailers and lorries, those where serial numbers were recorded.

There are a number of techniques we can use even if the plate has been removed to discover what the original serial number was. But realistically it is a lot easier to look for accepted forms of marking such as postcode and serial numbers than it is to look for bits that are missing or different colours here or there.

Since having my own trailer stolen a few years ago I now take no chances and yes they have been back for a second look but with upgraded wheel clamps etc they have gone away empty handed.

Basically get the best locks you can afford, look up independent reports on them before you buy, mark your trailer on its metalwork through marking schemes locally, bike shops or local police stations sometimes have the kits. Note where you have marked it.

Invest in some postcode vinyl stickers for the roof which are easy to spot from the air, or get up there this weekend with a brush and paint it on. As in the Crime Prevention thread above we have the help of Skywatch in looking for roof marked trailers. Consider using a tracker system with an old Mobile Phone, you will find them on the internet and they are inexpensive. It’s coming up for Christmas put all or some of these on your list!

NB looked into this there is no evidence to support the assumption that a majority of trailers stolen in the UK are exported. So if you are offered a cheap trailer remember you may be adding to someone’s misery. Also once a trailer with a serial number is reported stolen it can then be circulated nationally and people at the ports will be looking out for it.

IF YOU DO ONE THING TODAY PLEASE GO TO YOUR TRAILER OR LORRY AND NOTE DOWN THE SERIAL NUMBER.

Hi Hants Horsewatch

Some while ago I looked into buying an etching / engraving kit so I could mark all my stuff myself.

But couldn't find anything anywhere that a 'lay' person could use and that was reasonably priced.

When I was at school we had pen engravers that we used to plug in, wait for it to heat up and then use. Would cost £20 at the most - any idea where I can get one?

I don't know anyone, Police or otherwise that will engrave for me round this way.

Also, I emailed Skywatch about putting my Postcode on the roof of the trailer and they said not to bother as no matter how big the letters were, most helicopters wouldn't be able to read them from that high up - so that had me stumped as well.

Thanks

Hi sorry tried to reply this morning obviously didn't press go enough times!

That’s great and not a lot of money either! We have tack marking kits here for use at yards and events in the area. Usually it would be the local crime prevention team that you would need to contact, these kits are used to mark cycles, or sometimes bike shops have them. It is always worth contacting local Horsewatch schemes as well.

I will look into Skywatch as they have always been positive in the past but there is also some advantages to roof top marking in that it is visible from police aircraft and from motorway and road bridges also. It's a bit fiddly but again a deterrent and not a lot of money compared to a new trailer.

That's great a little bit of time spent marking at Christmas may make a big difference!

How's this for service:

Ordered an engraver and the letters punch thing from Screwfix yesterday, and they arrived at lunchtime today by Parcelforce!

The engravers' brill. I've already marked my digital camera and my mobile phone

Will let myself loose on all the tack at the weekend!!

Dear All
With regard to postcoding trailer and lorry roofs.
A decent sized letter (12 inches high) is easy to see from the air, even from 1000 feet. I have been up with Skywatch (who mainly use light planes and microlights) to test the theory and you would be suprised at what you can see from above. Down at 500 feet it is amazing how much you can pick out, water troughs and tracks in the field, vehicles parked in lanes, things hidden behind barns etc.
As always it can only ever be returned to you if it is identified so take a few minutes and mark all your property.
An order form for roof postcode letters can be found at http://www.newteq.ltd.uk/tvh/Fastsignsorderform.pdf
regards
Garry

My IW trailer was stolen a few years ago, had a hitch lock and heavy duty wheel clamp on it, they just bent the wheel clamp off!!

Thanks for those details Gary

One thing I'm always pondering on - if I move house and everythings marked with my old Postcode? How will my stuff find its way back to me?

Does it matter if I mark it with something else other than my Postcode?

Thanks

It doesn’t really matter what you mark the trailer with as long as you have a record of it and it's clearly visible, the object is that the marking is fairly unique and visible from above. Sighting, and recovery are the object of the exercise, identification can be established from other details provided by the owner when a vehicle is stolen. All marked police vehicles have roof markings for identification purposes, usually the force unique number followed by a number for the vehicle.

If you move or sell a trailer on it doesn't really matter, though what you do need to do if you sell it is to give the purchaser a receipt with the post code or marking written on it for their records.
