Have any of you attended Stonar School? Would be grateful for some thoughts... went to Badminton at the weekend and my girl wants to go - is it any good, or is it just a posh school with riding lessons?
I have many friends who have been to Stonar, and there are also several girls on my yard at the moment who are there. In general I've only ever heard good about it - the facilities are outstanding - however I have been told that it is perhaps more geared up towards sporting achievement than academic - if you have a child who is very strong academically then it may not be the best choice. A friend of mine started at Stonar but felt they weren't stretching her enough, and ended up going to Dauntsey's. That said, I am sure they still have their fair share of Oxbridge candidates! It just depends what you are looking to get from the school really.
That was my worry - the woman we were speaking to seemed too intent on talking about the horsey aspect of the school. My kid is bright, but will slack off if she is allowed to just spend time riding, etc. They are having an open day soon, so will go along and see what's what then, thanks for your feedback.
Funnily enough I've been wondering the same thing - I've always wanted to go there and looked at the Badminton booth as I am planning on changing for 6 form. The one thing that also worried my parents was that it may not be as strong academically as they would like, which I know may sound snobby, but also caught my attention! I think it looks fantastic though, and have heard quite a lot of good things about it - hence why I will be looking round it next September! xx
I went to stonar finished back in 2002, but i always loved it there i was not the most acedemic but managed to come away with 3 good a'levels, i was pushed to get the best i could and was pleased with what i got. Equestrain side was amazing, very much pushed and came away with so much, (though have slacked over the years with my finer riding ability and clearly spelling!) anything else you want to know justlet m know, cant reccomend it enough though i loved it there!
If it is any help in convincing your parents that Stonar will push you academically, I was a pupil in the Senior School and achieved 10A*s at GCSE and 4 A levels all at grade A. I am off to Durham University to study medicine in September and have Stonar to thank for my success. It is a great place to study, especially if you love horses, and the teachers are all really supportive, even if you have lots of other commitments such as events and competitions. Hope this helps!!!!
I left Stonar last year after being there for seven years, and I achieved 9 A*s and two A's at GCSE, and was one of five students in my year to gain one of the top five marks in the country for a subject (mine was English Lit., and the other girls achieved two top five marks in Spanish, one in French and one Geography). I found the teachers there very supportive and I was entered in for AS level music a year early, and it was great that there were teachers there that pushed me. I have just taken a gap year and will be starting uni in October where I will be studying medicine. On top of this I was a non-rider, who was far more interested in the performing arts and I never found Stonar too heavily focused on Riding or Sport.
Having played lots of hockey/netball matches there (I go to a girls school in the area) and competed horsey events there the sports facilities are great.
No sure about the academic side, one of the teachers as my school told me that a fair few of the pupils "are quite dim" but going by the above posts that doesn't seem to be the case.
