So my boy has came in lame frome field jst dragging a back toe. I was thinking it would have been from his hip or back but had farrier out and he has found a bit of a stone bruise. Could this cause this type of lameness or is it jst a coincidence?

It could do but with a stone bruise I usually find they are fine on the soft and tentative on uneven ground or hardcore. Can a bruise be seen? It does sometimes take a couple of days to appear. Is there any heat in the hoof? Possible abscess brewing? I’m pretty sure a bad bruise could lead to an abscess…

yes, I've been treating my horse on and off for a few weeks, thinking she had an abscess! without boots on she gets a raised pulse in that foot and looks really lame! with boots on the pulse goes completely and she trots around fine! this weekend I've seen a load of black bruising show up on her sole, which wasn't obvious before now.

I have a lot of 20+ year old hardcore down in front of my field shelter and last year the farmer added some more loose stones on top, so she has to walk on that every day! I've spent the last week trying to sweep away the newer loose stones to help! and finally she's comfortable.

I think where its gone from so dry and hard, to wet so quickly their feet have finally started to exfoliate and are more sensitive than they would be normally.

One of ours had a stone bruise 18 mths ago. He was dragging his toe and then went dog lame at one point. I was amazed when the vet said it was down to stepping on a stone in the field. We had to put him in a boot, with stable rest and it took several weeks for him to recover.
